Why does a small business need someone to handle IT? PDF

Who handles IT at your business, surly you have delegated someone to perform this task.

After all you have a business to run do you really have the time to allocate to IT or did you do what so many small businesses do and leave IT to a friend or relative or maybe the office secretary has that responsibility.

According to the SBA 80% of small businesses have no one in charge of IT. The other 15% have a friend or relative performing IT services; only 5% of the companies employ someone specifically for IT. The reason for this varies:

1.      It’s not needed.

2.      I do it all that way I know what’s going on.

3.      It’s too costly.

4.      We’re not that big.

5.      My _________ is up on that stuff.

6.      Suzy secretary can handle it she’s good.

7.      I never thought about it.

Now we aren’t going to draw this out to some multi-page document that is long and actually says nothing we are going to get to the meat of the subject,we will however rebuke these seven reasons.

1.   It's not needed.

If your company has a webpage, utilizes PC's in the workplace or is anyway part of the 21st century, you need someone to be in charge of that technology and if you don't have a webpage or utilize PC's your business isn't working efficiently or effectively the web and PC's are a part of everyday life even our children know this. You at least need someone that can objectively advise you so that you can make an informed decision and it should be a person who has no vested interest or in no way benefits from your decision.

2.   I do it all that, way I know what's going on.

As a small business owner you need to know what's going on, where am I spending my money and other things but first you need to run your business not be concerned with uptime, downtime,  is my site optimized how to I change or add a new article to my site. You do need to make informed decisions, and that is what an IT service can do for you, you are still in charge you just now have someone watching your back. Someone who brings you the facts not the fluff helping, you with the decision when needed and staying neutral when not needed.

3.   It's too costly.

The truth of the matter is its too costly not to have someone responsible for IT. Do you know how much money you could loose by hiring the wrong web designer, or how much you could loose because your website stopped working properly, do you know when it is working properly?

Again you need to be running the business not the technology, if you are running the technology it's costing you too much already that is if you value your time.

4.   We're not that big.

How will you get that big if you are spending your time managing the technology instead of growing your business?  You may not be that big yet but you at least need to think big. Even if you are a one person shop

And you may very well handle everything from database development to website building you need someone to provide information and advise and this can be an effective solution, an IT advisor. This service is not that costly and an ideal solution to the business that says I'm not that big or it's too costly.

 5.   My _________ is up on that stuff.

You fill in the blank, my cousin, my brother, my friend, my son, this could go on and on the bottom line is how available is the person is, this person really up on the latest technology. There are and always will be jacks of all trades and there will always be the jackleg IT person that knows a lot about everything but is not focused on what your needs. Plus these people usually have jobs of their own so how dedicated are they to your needs.

6.   Suzy secretary can handle it she's good.

I feel sorry for this person whom ever she might be, she's task with running you whole operation and she's probably underpaid although extremely appreciated. She's a secretary, use her as you wish but don't task her with IT duties for which she is not trained. It's ok if she interfaces with an IT person to pass info on to you. She probably doesn't know the difference between DNS and INS.

7.   I never thought about it.

This is probably one of the most truthful of all the statements on the list, and a lot of you will fall under this category. You just never gave a thought to having someone do the IT work and advise you of the proper things to do. You thought how hard can this be I'll just do it myself. How much thought have you given to extracting that bothersome tooth or how much thought have you give on replacing that bad fuel injection system. Take a moment and think of how IT services can help you, save money, get what you want, grow your business, prevent costly mistakes.

We've been very shallow in detailing why small businesses generally don't choose to have IT services, and I'm sure we could go on and on with reason after reason. What we have tried to do here is place within your mind reasons why IT services can be beneficial in growing your business, saving you money and just make plain old good business sense.
